How I’m Spending My 40th Birthday
To celebrate my arrival at middle age, my wife Kara has taken the week off from work so we can spend it together doing stuff around town or around the house.
Yesterday my desire was to go and see with my own eyes something that I’ve neglected to check out in the 22 years that I’ve been in New York City: the Unisphere in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. I’d never been to that park before; it’s reallyquite lovely. I was also fascinated by a statue called “Rocket Thrower.” Very Greek-mythology-esque.
Today’s agenda is simple. Right now we’re preparing brunch — bagels from our favorite bagelry, scrambled eggs, fresh lattes. This afternoon we’ll go out to see Star Trek in IMAX. Then we’re going out for a sushi dinner at an acclaimed sushi restaurant recommended to us by some friends.
Tomorrow we’ll be hanging out with our friends Glenn and Brandy; just a low-key dinner of my wife’s excellent sage chicken and some good wine courtesy of our amigos.
Thursday, Kara and I will be joined by our friends Sten and Rebecca for dinner and an excursion to the Broadway musical Rock of Ages.
Friday is a recovery day.
On Saturday, Jon and Jen Cooper, some old friends of mine who now live in Atlanta, will be back in NYC, so we’ll be hanging out with them.
Sunday is another afternoon of Battlestar Galactica and tasty brunch with our friend Emily.
Since one has no choice but to get older, I think this is a good way to do it.
