Latest Web Report Fun Facts

It’s been a little while since I posted fun details from my web site’s Google Analytics report. So here goes.

Overall, traffic seems to be up roughly 14% in the past 30 days from the previous one-month period, which is good. I think a spike of visits related to The Calling‘s blog tour helped.

As usual, I remain fascinated by the fact that I get visits from far-flung countries. It just makes me smile to think that someone I’ve never met is literally on the other side of the world, visiting my li’l ol’ web site.

Which countries got my notice in this month’s web report? Though their number of visits is usually measured only in single digits, let me say hello to whoever visited my site from Malaysia, Pakistan, Guatemala, Honduras, Brunei, Panama, the Isle of Man, and Ghana. Also, a tip of the hat to my New Zealand visitor from the Palmerston North area.

Most folks who found my site did so using Google; the next-largest group of visitors arrived there via direct links. After that, my next biggest referrers were Yahoo and Twitter, with Bing a distant fifth.

The most commonly used keywords to reach my site last month were, in order: david mack; dave mack; david mack the calling; david mack site; and, the calling by david mack.

Okay, I’ll stop now.

Web Stats Update

Howdy, sports fans! It’s time again for my website’s ego-statistical update.

For the period of January 1, 2009, through March 2, 2009, my official website, davidmack.pro, has seen moderate traffic.

According to Google Analytics, my site received 1,819 visits from 62 countries/territories, resulting in 4,869 pageviews. Approximately 78 percent of those were tagged as new visitors.

Not surprisingly, the majority of my site traffic (1,247 visits) came from the United States. (My estimate is that only 33 of those visits were actually me checking my site after content updates. I’ve finally and belatedly set up an IP filter to prevent my visits from showing up in these numbers.)

In distant second and third place, respectively, were the United Kingdom (145 visits) and Canada (130 visits).

Occupying spots four through nine were double-digit contenders Germany (59), Australia (30), France (28), Ireland (20), The Netherlands (12), and Italy (10).

The rest of the field lies in single-digit territory. Lots of repeats from my previous report, but a few that make me smile because they are so remote and/or new: Singapore, Croatia, Thailand, Algeria, Madagascar, Iraq, Pakistan, Jordan, and The United Arab Emirates (and scores of others from throughout Europe, South America, Africa, and Asia).

The five most visited pages were, in order, the main page, the books page, my bio, the information page for The Calling, and my news page.

The sources of my traffic seem to have been split equally between referring sites, Google searches (most of which appear to have been looking for me and not the other David Mack), and direct visits (probably bookmarks). The top referring sites are Wikipedia, the TrekBBS, ISFDB.org, and Memory Alpha. Interesting.

That concludes this report from the DavidMack.pro control room. You may now resume your web-surfing, already in progress.

Putting the World in the Wide Web

A few months ago, I installed Google Analytics on my official Web site. Combined with Google’s tools for webmasters, it has been a real learning experience, as I’ve discovered all the things I have been doing wrong all these years.

But some of what I’ve learned has been really fun. For starters, since November 1, 2008, there have been 1,134 unique visits to my site; even more interesting, those visitors hail from 547 cities in 45 different countries.

As one might imagine, the majority of my site’s traffic (809 visits) came from the United States. But it’s cool to see where the rest of it came from:

United Kingdom (81)
Canada (73)
Germany (45)
Australia (17)
Ireland (10)
The Netherlands (8)
France (8)
Spain (6)
The Phillipines (5)
Italy (5)
Sweden and an unidentified territory (4 from both)

I know it shouldn’t surprise me, but it just feels kind of cool to know that there are people all over the world who, through whatever combination of choice or error, have visited my web site and learned perhaps a little bit about li’l ol’ me.
