47 is a Magic Number in Star Trek: The Engage Podcast (#SFWApro)

47 is a magical number in Star Trek. The number “47” shows up again and again, across all of the 24th-century series. It has even spread to other genre series.

ENGAGE Official Star Trek Podcast Logo - Episode 47

I and host Jordan Hoffman discuss what makes the integer 47 so special in Star Trek and beyond on Episode #47 of ENGAGE, The Official Star Trek Podcast.

We lay some of the blame at the feet of former and current Star Trek producer Joe Menosky, and then we go off on a bunch of tangents before grudgingly circling back to the episode’s premise.

I must confess that I’ve played my part in this phenomenon, with the titular starbase of my Star Trek Vanguard saga also being known as Starbase 47.

(Bonus trivia point: this episode was taped just a few days before my birthday, so I was 47 years old when we recorded it.)

At any rate, if you’ve ever noticed the proliferation of the number 47 throughout Star Trek, Alias, and Fringe (among other series and films), this is the podcast you’ve been waiting for. And if not, well, it’s still a pleasantly diverting hour of geekery.

Give it a listen, Trek fans.

Tragedy in Section 31: Control (#SFWApro)

Some literary philosophies hold there are only two kinds of stories, tragedies and comedies. I crafted my new Star Trek novel Section 31: Control as an unapologetic tragedy. In this podcast I explain why.

Literary Treks #186 - "A Tragedy in Every Sense of the Word"

I joined Literary Treks co-hosts Dan Gunther and Bruce Gibson to talk about the inspirations and implications of my novel, the rationale for writing an entire chapter of the novel in computer code, and the rather polarized response it has garnered from fans of the Star Trek books. Also on the agenda was a conversation about the roles played in the story by androids Data and his daughter, Lal.

We conclude our discussion with some teases concerning what readers can expect from my next two Star Trek novels, Titan: Fortune of War and Discovery: Desperate Hours. I also tacked on a reminder that roughly ten months from now my new Tor Books original trilogy Dark Arts will debut with my long-awaited World War II fantasy epic The Midnight Front.

So point your browsers toward Literary Treks and check out episode 186, “Tragedy in Every Sense of the Word,” and get a peek behind the curtains that conceal my creative process.

More Interview Goodness on Generations Geek

Late last year, I sat for a lengthy interview by my pal Scott Pearson for his podcast Generations Geek. We had such a great and rambling chat that he ended up having to cut the interview into two parts.

Part Two

The new installment, Episode 41: “Midnight Mack,” is now live on The Chronic Rift Network. In this hour-long interview we discuss my non-Star Trek tie-in work, including my award-winning 24 novel, Rogue, and my contribution to the short-story anthology 2113: Stories Inspired by the Music of Rush.

We also dig into my original works, starting with my 2009 urban fantasy novel The Calling, and then we segué into my upcoming Dark Arts series for Tor Books, which will kick off in February 2018 with The Midnight Front.

Part One

If you’d like to listen to the first half of our conversation, in Episode #40: “Mack Trek we talked mostly about my work for Star Trek through the years and across many media, including television, comic books, video games, and novels.

Talkin’ ’bout my Generations Geek (#SFWApro)

My good friend (and fellow author) Scott Pearson interviewed me a few weeks ago for his podcast series, Generations Geek. He usually shares hosting duties with his daughter, Ella, but she has recently started college, so this chat with Scott was mano a mano.

We yakked for so long that Scott had to cut the interview into two parts, only the first of which is ready for public consumption. In this episode, we talk about my work for Star Trek through the years and across many media, including television, comic books, video games, and novels.

We also dig a bit deeper into my work for the Star Trek: S.C.E. (Starfleet Corps of Engineers) monthly eBook novella series, and my bestselling Star Trek Destiny trilogy. And, because this is me and Scott, there are more than a few digressions along the way.

So, if you’re into this, refill your drinks and settle in for a freewheeling gabfest.

Talking Trek & Rush on ENGAGE

I talked last week with Jordan Hoffman of Engage: The Official Star Trek Podcast about my work for Star Trek — in particular, the Vanguard saga. We also touch briefly upon my upcoming projects, including my novel based on the new CBS All Access series Star Trek: Discovery.

We also spent a fair amount of time talking about my love for the work of Canadian rock trio RUSH, and the major influence their work has had on my own. And every time you think we might finally be done talking about Rush, we circle back to it. It was a hell of a thing.

If you just can’t get enough of the dulcet tones of my voice, or the brilliant insights of my warped brain, give it a listen. (My segment starts about 10-11 minutes in.)

Talking about BEST DEFENSE

Now live for your listening enjoyment is Literary Treks episode #159, The Twilight Zone,” in which I discuss the inspirations and ideas behind my latest Star Trek novel Legacies, Book 2: Best Defense.

lt-159-th-1440

With hosts Matthew Rushing, Dan Gunther, and Bruce Gibson I discussed what it was like for me to finally write a novel based on and featuring the original series characters and Enterprise; the creative process behind the inception of the Transfer Key and how it connects to Star Trek‘s canon; the trilogy’s story-development process; its characters’ arcs; the thinking behind the trilogy’s alternate dimension and new alien antagonists; plus a peek at the work I have coming in 2017.

Midnight Rider: Love Betrayed, Love Avenged

Out_of_Tune_II-2Part two of my recent interview with the guys at trek.fm‘s Stage 9 is now live! In this segment, we talk about my new “weird Western” tale “Midnight Rider,” from the new anthology Out of Tune, Book 2, edited by Jonathan Maberry.

My story was inspired by the old English ballad “The Suffolk Miracle,” and I spoke with Stage 9 about the thought process that led me to make the creative decisions necessary for this adaptation of the ballad’s tale to a new setting and ending. We also discuss the challenges and rewards of writing short fiction versus novels.
