SCORPIUS #3 Review

Another month brings another issue of Farscape: Scorpius from the fine folks at BOOM! Studios, and so far the reviews have been good. Just today, Nathan Wilson at the Broken Frontier blog writes:

“BOOM! Studios’ adaptation of Rockne S. O’Bannon’s Farscape universe, particularly that of the David Alan Mack-written Farscape: Scorpius, has done a spectacular job of taking a television property and successfully transporting it into the comic realm, a feat often attempted but rarely achieved.”

“A case study in character and the mind, Farscape: Scorpius is a compelling and brilliant book.  David Alan Mack has taken audiences into a world crafted by Rockne S. O’Bannon and made it his own.”

That’s a good note on which to go through my day.  For those of you who haven’t checked out Farscape: Scorpius just yet … what the hell are you waiting for? <wink>

Preview of SCORPIUS #2 on CBR

The fine folks over at Comic Book Resources have posted a six-page preview of Farscape: Scorpius #2 (story by Rockne S. O’Bannon, script by yours truly, art by Mike Ruiz).

Here’s the synopsis:

Once, Scorpius had the whole of the Peacekeeper army at his command. But that is far in the past. Now, Scorpius rises again with a new army – one that has an ancient origin and a dark secret.

Check it out, and remember to buy your copy when it comes out on June 30.

Scorpius #1 a hit w/ The Outhouse

Another new issue of Farscape: Scorpius, and another good review on The Outhouse comic-book forum.

Here is a small taste of the praise:

“[K]udos to O’Bannon and Mack. Once more I can hear Wayne Prygram’s voice in all this perfectly.”

“Farscape: Scorpius is … a great look at the series’s greatest villain. … [It] might truly be the best bad-guy book out there.”

Sadly, the reviewer seems less enthused with the art by Mike Ruiz, but to each his own.

Broken Frontier reviews SCORPIUS #1

My trusty Google news alert has this evening brought to my attention this review by Nathan Wilson at Broken Frontier of Farscape: Scorpius #1.

Among the many nice things Mr. Wilson said about the issue, here are a few of my favorite quotes:

“Mack does an excellent job in this first issue of establishing how events in the villain’s past shaped and molded the “real time” experiences of Scorpius as he engages the Grennij.  Particularly innovative is how Mack juxtaposes previous betrayals and manipulations against Scorpius’ contemporary motives with Grrior.”

“Well-paced, succinct and vivid writing, there is not a single weakness in Mack’s storyline or plot.”

“Mack and O’Bannon succeed with Farscape: Scorpius #1 where a lot of other first issues (although technically a second issue because of #0) fail.  Fans of the television show will see and appreciate both the familiar and the new here.  Fans who read the main series will find the story revelations and interplay between Scorpius and other members of the Farscape universe, both past and present, a strong companion to their other monthly purchase.”

Podcast interview with yours truly

Chuck Moore from the Comic Related website interviewed me at C2E2 about my work on Farscape: Scorpius and other related subjects. It’s The Related Recap #190 — I just listened to it, and I think it turned out rather well. For those interested in checking it out, my segment starts at 6 minutes, 9 seconds into the show.

New review of SCORPIUS #0

Brandon Barrows over at Cosmic Book News has reviewed the premiere issue of Farscape: Scorpius. In short, he loved it.

The money quotes:

I was quite pleased with David Alan Mack’s treatment of this character and his scripting over Rockne S. O’Bannon’s (the franchise’s creator) plot. Equally pleasing was Mike Ruiz’s art and Nolan Woodward’s colors. The book has a very dark, ominous tone that fits both the character of Scorpius and the Farscape universe perfectly.

If you are a Farscape fan, or just a fan of good comics storytelling, do yourself a favor and buy this book. I doubt anything will top it on this week’s release list.

One thing I notice after reading several reviews of Scorpius #0 is that many readers are not aware that Scorpius is not a limited miniseries but an ongoing monthly. Methinks an advertising blitz is called for here…
